Poás Volcano erupts

Poás Volcano, located 30 kilometers from downtown Alajuela, has shown a dramatic increase in activity over the past several days. The massif erupted this morning shortly before 8:00 am, sending a plume of ash and gasses over three kilometers skyward.

Parque Nacional Volcán Poás, the second-most visited national park, is currently closed.

Ash has been reported in communities near the volcano, including Alajuela and Heredia. The National Emergency Commission has placed the following seven cantons under Green Alert: Poás, Valverde Vega, Alajuela, Zarcero, Grecia, San Carlos and Río Cuarto. A Green Alert involves stepping up monitoring and communication in the designated areas. No injuries have been reported.
